Chapter 7

Cassie stood on shaking legs as she stared at the door in confusion. Then forcing herself to move she stumbled forward, willing her fumbling fingers to turn the lock. She stood trembling as she leaned against the door trying to make sense of what had just happened.

Taking a deep steadying breath she made her way to the couch. Needing to hear his voice again she stared at the telephone willing it to ring, but it sat stubbornly silent.

Dropping her head into her hands she moaned as she realized how she had reacted to Logan’s kiss. What must he think of her? Did he think she acted like this with every man who kissed her? Never in her life had she known that she could feel this way. Hot and cold at the same time the memory flooded over her again.

Instinctively she knew that what she felt was normal, but she was a firm believer in the sanctity of marriage. She was not naïve enough to ignore what might have happened if Logan hadn’t left. What shocked her was that she hadn’t wanted him to go. She was thankful that he at least, had enough strength to walk away.

Her face flamed as she remembered Logan’s talk of how they could get to know each other on the telephone without distractions. He had called her a distraction and he had said he was having a hard time keeping his hands off her yet here she was showing no restraint whatsoever.

Suddenly she saw it all with startling clarity. Logan was having the same feelings that she was! She knew he liked her and had felt that he was attracted to her, but this was something different. This went far deeper and it had been growing since that first day they had made eye contact so long ago. Somehow she had failed to realize that she was in deeply in love with Logan.

Love. Her hands flew to her burning cheeks, shaken to the very core of her being. She was in love with Logan. Now she understood so many things. The electricity that had seemed to flow through her whenever he was near and the almost physic connection they seemed to have at times. This was love. Not the cozy contented feeling with a few warm kisses that she’d heard about. This was something real and... alive! The word came unbidden to her brain. This was what she had felt between her and Logan at the party before Jenna had hugged her and brought her down to earth.

Logan couldn’t be in love with her. She mustn’t let this go any farther. He hadn’t reacted badly to the scars on her arm, but then he hadn’t seen the rest of her. The memory of how he’d kissed the scar on her face brought a crimson glow to her skin. How would...? No she wouldn’t allow her thoughts to go there. Instead she bowed her head and sought the strength and comfort she needed from the only one she knew could help her.
